Greetings friends, and welcome back to the Collardhammer special! I should begin by apologising for the gap in writing these blog posts. I think it has been about 3 months since the last post, and a lot has changed for me! I got married, bought a flat and have been searching for a new job, and between all that, working and engaging with the hobby, there hasn’t been much time for other projects. My keyboard also broke, which didn’t help. Anyway, between everything else, I’ve mostly been working on my Emperor’s Children, with a view to getting the first 1k points finished by the end of the year.
On that note, here is the Trello board for my EC:
Everything is at the very least assembled now, and the
painting is about 60% finished. I’ve also added Lucius to the collection and
will be picking up the Christmas battleforce with Fulgrim, Flawless Blades and
the final unit of Noise Marines for a full set. This means that of the EC launch,
the only thing I don’t have is a Lord Kakophonist and with the battleforce, I’ll
be sitting on around 1800 points, which feels like a good amount for gaming
with. My local playgroup tends to prefer 1k or 1500, so having some options
while not being overloaded is ideal. I also imagine the faction will be getting
more releases before too long, with a Kill Team feeling quite likely.
That’s enough prattling about my plan for the army, I assume most of you want to see what I’ve painted. Here are I also painted the Lord Exultant, which was a real treat:

I haven’t painted much (or any) red on any of the other models in the box, so I thought I would take this as an opportunity to paint a rich, dark red on the cloak to make him stand out. I also went with painting the helmet white for this purpose. Overall, I really enjoyed this and am considering picking up another one, although I am also considering kitbashing one from the Heresy range. Next up were a unit of 5 Infractors. These were similar in process to the Tormentors from the last post and like most of the rest of the release were good fun to paint. One thing that I am not hugely keen on with the kit is that the unit leader is supposed to be the same body each time, which across an army would look a bit repetitive. I’ve hopefully fixed this for the unpainted units by assembling them a little differently, so will aim to show them off in a future post. Speaking of kitbashing, I had a Sisters Rhino sitting around unassembled, so I built it for the EC and gave it some extra themed trimmings:

I think this turned out really quite well, with the weathering being just right to convey a wet, muddy quagmire, without being too over the top. I have mentioned this before in these blog posts, but I am really having fun with this project. I am generally quite a self-critical person, going far beyond mini painting, meaning that while I enjoy painting, I don’t often feel great about the results. In fact, this was one of my main reasons for starting this blog, to have an outlet to share my hobby more.
Moving on, I have also managed to get some gaming in over
the last few months, predominantly as part of the ongoing crusade campaign. I
had two games against Thousand Sons and a game against Tyranids, both of which
I played with Sisters, and a team game where my Imperial Agents teamed up with
Astra Militarum against combined Chaos forces. The games were all good fun, and
the campaign is going reasonably well, even though some of the players have
dropped off. The current plan is to bring the campaign to an end in the next
few months, assuming we can get some games in and wrap it up in a nice,
narrative way. For several players, the forces involved have lore going back
into previous campaigns, so providing a satisfying wrap up is important, preferably
before the new edition comes out at the latest.

For more general hobby, it would be remiss of me not to mention the reveal show from the weekend. One of the main aspects of the campaign has been playing boarding actions, and I’ve grown quite fond of the format, so hearing that the new content for the end of the edition is going to add more to the format was great. Obviously, it would be nice if GW released content for any faction other than Space Marines (Ultramarines in particular), but I will take whatever I can get for 40k. The Cathay reveals were once again stunning, and having written in this blog that I’d likely pick up the army with a second wave, I am strongly considering starting the army. However, I don’t know many local Old World players and I do still have Tomb Kings to paint (on top of Emperor’s Children). It would certainly be more justifiable if I had a chance to play with them.

Anyway, that’s probably enough for this blog post! I don’t have any games in the calendar at the minute, but I am hoping to start playing with the EC soon. On the painting front, I’ve painted 2 of the 6 remaining Noise Marines, so will aim to finish the unit. The EC battleforce will likely be with me in a few weeks, so I’ll also have a wave of new stuff to build and paint. I’ll probably re-prioritise some of the other painting to get some Flawless Blades done, just to help out with list diversity, and the prospect of painting Fulgrim is also quite exciting. I am hoping to write another blog post before too long, but until then, have a wonderful week of your own hobby!
Peace and love,
Ben
