Hello friends, and welcome back to the CollardHammer Special! I am taking a break from reading through the Emperor’s Children codex to bring you this update on my hobby progress over the last week or so and provide ‘hot’ takes on the state of Warhammer 40k. To be honest, if you are still reading, you probably have a good sense of the format by now. This week I went a little rogue and did some painting that wasn’t on my Trello chart. I know that means I’ve gone two weeks on the trot without progressing anything I initially set out into the complete column, but in my defence, I have got plenty of hobby stuff done.
Speaking of getting hobby stuff done, here is how my Trello
chart looks this week:
You might notice that the only change is that an Emperor’s Children Daemon Prince has made its way into the completed column. I decided after the LVO previews that I wanted to treat myself to the new boxset, and after my friend posted in our discord about wanting to move on a bunch of stuff, a copy of the old plastic Daemon Prince was too tempting to not pick up. It was pure gravy when I read his datasheet and heard suggestions that he’d be strong in Coterie of the Conceited, my favourite detachment from the codex. The only unfortunate thing was that the model was already assembled and didn’t have any of the legion specific iconography. I think this isn’t such a big deal, due to the obvious heavy chaos corruption and general chaos symbols on the armour.
By now, you’re probably chomping at the bit to see him:

To get this out of
the way, he isn’t based right now, mainly because I haven’t decided how I’d
like to base the army as a whole. I genuinely have no idea what kind of basing
scheme would go well with my Emperor’s Children colour scheme or what conflicts
the faction is involved with in the lore currently. If you are reading this and
have any ideas about this, feel free to get in contact with suggestions! I am
generally really pleased with how this has turned out. The pink is Pink Horror,
shaded by thinned Volopus Pink, layered with Emperor’s Children and highlighted
with Forbidden Fruit from The Army Painter. The skin is Cadian Fleshtone, also
shaded with Volopus Pink and layered with Kislev Flesh and then Ionrach Skin.
The silver trim is Leadbelcher, shaded pink (surprise, surprise) and
highlighted with Stormhost Silver. Overall, I really enjoyed painting the
daemon prince and am looking forward to expanding the colour scheme to the Noise
Marines and other models in the Champions boxset.
Moving on to the
Emperor’s Children project as a whole, I am finding the boxset as a whole very
exciting. I think up close, the Infractors and Tormentors are better sculpts
than I’d originally thought. The Noise Marines and the Lord are both big hits
for me and they all come with plenty of extra bits which I’m sure will prove
useful for other projects too. The duelling sabres particularly I think could
be good choices for heresy-era Night Lords. One of the things that’s jumped out
at me from the hobby sections of the codex is that the Flawless Blades also
look a lot better than I thought. Obviously, one thing that’s quite
disappointing in the codex is the lack of some classic datasheets, as I think
that the Deimos pattern heresy tanks would look pretty good with the new sculpts.
No Predator definitely hurts, and some of the other CSM minis could have gone
well with the release. I think what we have for now will comfortably tide me
over until a presumed 2nd release wave in the next edition.
Having spoken about
my feelings on Sisters after the last balance dataslate at some length, I think
it’s only fair to say something now too. I am (perhaps unsurprisingly) quite
pleased with the dataslate, bringing a partial reversal of the miracle dice
change and points cuts to a wide range of Sisters units. I am particularly
interested in the points cuts to Repentia and Arco-Flagellants, which are some
of the key units in Penitent Host, the detachment I’ve been consistently playing
in our crusade campaign. My 1000-point list went down by enough to add an
entire extra character, which definitely considerably helps. Penitent Host is
hopefully also going to get a new tool when the rules for the new kill team
drop, which could significantly improve the fortunes of the detachment.
Additionally, the maths on Sisters boarding
patrols changed quite significantly, with a new viable list looking like 3 lots
of 5 Repentia, a unit of 10 Arcos and 2 Ministorum Priests in the Penitents and
Pilgrims patrol. I am going to be taking this for a game of Boarding Actions
this weekend and am really looking forward to playing it. While Imperial Agents
didn’t receive any rules help, I think the other changes breathing life back
into a variety of Sisters strategies is more than good enough to get me back to
playing the faction, even if they’re still not great. I’m also excited for the
prospect of new detachments for my factions, especially as adding new enhancements
is really fun for crusade. I think I’d most like to see
Anyhow, I think I am
going to call it there for this week. I picked up my Champions boxset yesterday
and am probably going to try to get some Emperor’s Children built. I could also
do with assembling some more Repentia in time for the game on Sunday. I have a 3000-point
crusade game lined up for the following weekend, which may also require some
hobby prep (including completing the Repentia) and will definitely require some
narrative work. This game is likely to be against More Dakka, so please pray for me. Until next time, I hope you have a great week of your own
hobby/life!

I can’t speak on the current lore for the Children, but how about a corrupted jungle for the base scheme, maybe a callback to Murder? I think a green/yellow heavy scheme would compliment the pinks and blacks nicely, and you can always throw in some flowers/fruit/mutations for some variety.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, looking good! I look forward to seeing what you decide to do with them.
